BZ2 holds one file only and is slow to compress. ZIP opens on every computer and phone without extra software. BZ2 is at home in compressing one file or a TAR archive on Unix systems; ZIP is the usual choice for sending several files as one.
A password-protected archive is refused, since its contents cannot be read without the password. A .bz2 file holds one file and no folders; that file is unpacked as it is and then repacked into the ZIP.
bzip2 compresses a single file with the Burrows-Wheeler transform, giving smaller files than gzip but slower. It was the default for source tarballs before XZ took over, and .bz2 files are still common in scientific data.
