A big JSON array has to be read as a whole before any of it can be used. JSON Lines puts one record on each line, so tools can stream, split and append to it, and databases such as BigQuery load it directly.
One JSON can produce several JSONL files (one record per line); when it does, they are offered together as a ZIP download.
Each record is written on its own line with no enclosing array. A workbook or database with several tables gives one file per table.
JSON represents data as nested objects and lists in plain text. It is the default language of web APIs. Unlike a spreadsheet it can be nested to any depth, which is also why turning it into rows and columns takes a decision about how to flatten it.

The values are kept. Anything JSONL has no way to express, such as formatting, formulas or nesting, is simplified or left out.

Yes. Data files up to 300 MB are accepted; a larger file is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
