How to convert JSON to ARROW

  1. Add your JSON data files

Drop JSON files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. ARROW is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the result. When one file produces several ARROW files they come as a single ZIP.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The JSON to ARROW converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your data files are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

JSON to ARROW: what to expect

JSON is hard to read in bulk and cannot be opened as a table without flattening. Arrow is typed and quick for analytics tools to load. JSON is at home in APIs and data exchanged between programs; ARROW is the usual choice for passing tables between data tools without conversion cost.

One JSON can produce several ARROW files; when it does, they are offered together as a ZIP download.

Each column gets one type chosen from all of its values: a column is numeric only if every non-empty cell is a number, and anything mixed, or a value such as a ZIP code with a leading zero, stays text. A workbook with several sheets gives one file per sheet.

JSON vs ARROW

JSON

JSON data

JSON represents data as nested objects and lists in plain text. It is the default language of web APIs. Unlike a spreadsheet it can be nested to any depth, which is also why turning it into rows and columns takes a decision about how to flatten it.

ARROW

Apache Arrow table

Arrow files store a table in the same column-wise layout the Arrow library uses in memory, so a program can read the data without parsing it. It is written for speed rather than size. The streaming variant uses the .arrows extension. Feather version 2 is the same file format.

Opens in pandas, Polars, DuckDB, R's arrow package and other analytics tools; not Excel

Questions

Are my data files uploaded anywhere?

No. The JSON to ARROW conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting JSON to ARROW?

The values are kept. Anything ARROW has no way to express, such as formatting, formulas or nesting, is simplified or left out.

Can I convert several JSON files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert JSON to ARROW on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the JSON file, press Convert and save the ARROW. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Data files up to 300 MB are accepted; a larger file is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
