About APNG
APNG extends PNG with animation while staying backwards compatible: a program that knows only PNG shows the first frame. Unlike GIF it has 24-bit colour and a full alpha channel. Firefox pioneered it and every major browser now plays it.
APNG is lossless and large, and many apps show only its first frame. APNG animates with full colour and smooth transparency, which GIF cannot do.
