RPM is a Linux installation package that Windows and macOS cannot install. ZIP opens on every computer and phone without extra software. RPM is at home in installing software on Red Hat and SUSE based Linux; ZIP is the usual choice for sending several files as one.
A password-protected archive is refused, since its contents cannot be read without the password. RPM files are read, not installed or mounted: every file inside is unpacked and repacked into the ZIP, so nothing of the system image or installer is run.
An .rpm is the package format of Red Hat, Fedora, CentOS and SUSE. It combines a header describing the package with a compressed cpio archive of the files, and usually carries a signature. Opening one shows its files without installing it.

Yes. An archive can be up to 500 MB, unpack to at most 1 GB and hold up to 50,000 files; beyond those limits the page says so. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
