How to convert MBOX to TXT

  1. Add your MBOX mailboxes

Drop MBOX (MBX) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. TXT is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the TXT, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The MBOX to TXT converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your mailboxes are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

MBOX to TXT: what to expect

MBOX is one big file with no index, and different programs write it slightly differently. Plain text opens on every device and is easy to search or paste elsewhere. MBOX is at home in archiving or moving a whole mailbox; TXT is the usual choice for notes, logs and text that must be read by anything.

All messages go onto one text file, up to 2,000 of them; a bigger mailbox is refused and the message suggests splitting it into EML files first. Mailboxes up to 400 MB are accepted.

MBOX vs TXT

MBOX

Mailbox

An MBOX file holds many emails one after another in a single text file, each starting with a From line. It is the oldest Unix mailbox layout, Thunderbird stores folders this way, and Google Takeout exports Gmail as MBOX. Several slightly different variants exist.

Opens in Thunderbird, Apple Mail (import) and Unix mail tools; Gmail exports use it

TXT

Plain text

A TXT file is characters and nothing else: no fonts, no images, no layout. That makes it the most portable document there is, and the easiest to search, diff or feed into another program.

Questions

Are my mailboxes uploaded anywhere?

No. The MBOX to TXT conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting MBOX to TXT?

Text is kept. Formatting carries over only as far as TXT supports it.

Can I convert several MBOX files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert MBOX to TXT on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the MBOX file, press Convert and save the TXT. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. A mailbox can be up to 400 MB; a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
