How to convert MBOX to EML

  1. Add your MBOX mailboxes

Drop MBOX (MBX) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. EML is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the result. When one file produces several EML files they come as a single ZIP.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The MBOX to EML converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your mailboxes are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

MBOX to EML: what to expect

An MBOX is a whole mailbox in one long file, which is how Thunderbird stores folders and how Google Takeout exports Gmail. EML is one message per file, which most mail programs open by double-click and which suits archiving or importing single messages.

One MBOX can produce several EML files (one file per message); when it does, they are offered together as a ZIP download.

Every message becomes its own .eml file, kept exactly as it was in the mailbox, and the files come as a ZIP. Mailboxes up to 400 MB are accepted.

MBOX vs EML

MBOX

Mailbox

An MBOX file holds many emails one after another in a single text file, each starting with a From line. It is the oldest Unix mailbox layout, Thunderbird stores folders this way, and Google Takeout exports Gmail as MBOX. Several slightly different variants exist.

Opens in Thunderbird, Apple Mail (import) and Unix mail tools; Gmail exports use it

EML

E-mail message

An EML file is one email saved as plain text: headers such as From and Subject, then the body, with attachments encoded as text. The layout is the Internet message format that mail servers use. Most mail programs can open it and drag-and-drop one out of a message list.

Opens in Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and any text editor

Questions

Are my mailboxes uploaded anywhere?

No. The MBOX to EML conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting MBOX to EML?

Text is kept. Formatting carries over only as far as EML supports it.

Can I convert several MBOX files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert MBOX to EML on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the MBOX file, press Convert and save the EML. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. A mailbox can be up to 400 MB; a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
