FB2 does not open on Kindle or in Apple Books. EPUB reflows to fit any screen and opens in most e-reader apps. FB2 is at home in e-books, especially from Russian-language libraries; EPUB is the usual choice for e-books that adapt to any screen size.
The text encoding named in the file's XML declaration is used. Embedded PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP pictures are kept; links other than web and email addresses are dropped. Chapters are cut at the headings and pictures are kept; fonts and page design are not part of the result, so the e-reader chooses how it looks.
FB2 is an XML e-book format that separates a book's structure from its looks: sections, poems, epigraphs and notes are marked up, and the reader decides the layout. Images sit inside the file as base64 text. It is very common in Russian-language libraries.
