How to convert AAC to M4R

  1. Add your AAC audio files

Drop AAC files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. M4R is already chosen

Press Convert. Open Options first if you want to change the defaults. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the M4R, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

AAC to M4R: what to expect

A raw AAC file has no container, so some players cannot seek in it or read its tags. M4R is the only format an iPhone accepts as a custom ringtone. AAC is at home in efficient audio for streaming and video soundtracks; M4R is the usual choice for custom iPhone ringtones and alert tones. Both formats are lossy, so the content is compressed a second time; start from the best copy you have.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can choose the bitrate and trim the start and end.

The conversion uses your browser's own video and audio codecs (WebCodecs), with hardware acceleration where the device has it; the file is read from disk as it goes and can be up to 2 GB. Where the browser lacks a codec, the page falls back to the compatibility engine. An iPhone ringtone is limited to 40 seconds, so only 40 seconds are kept, from the start point you set under Options (the beginning by default). M4R is written at 192 kbps unless you choose another bitrate.

AAC vs M4R

AAC

AAC audio

AAC was designed as the successor to MP3 and is the audio codec inside most MP4 videos and streaming services. A bare .aac file is the raw stream without a container, which some players handle poorly.

An M4R file is an M4A with a different extension, which is how an iPhone recognises it as a ringtone. Ringtones are limited to about 40 seconds.

Questions

Are my audio files uploaded anywhere?

No. The AAC to M4R conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting AAC to M4R reduce quality?

M4R is a lossy format, so a small amount of detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can choose the bitrate under Options.

Can I convert several AAC files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert AAC to M4R on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the AAC file, press Convert and save the M4R. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Files up to 2 GB are accepted. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
