  3. Download

Save the M4R, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

M4A to M4R: what to expect

M4A is refused by some car stereos, older players, editors and upload forms. M4R is the only format an iPhone accepts as a custom ringtone. M4A is at home in music and voice memos on Apple devices; M4R is the usual choice for custom iPhone ringtones and alert tones. Both formats are lossy, so the content is compressed a second time; start from the best copy you have.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can choose the bitrate and trim the start and end.

The conversion uses your browser's own video and audio codecs (WebCodecs), with hardware acceleration where the device has it; the file is read from disk as it goes and can be up to 2 GB. Where the browser lacks a codec, the page falls back to the compatibility engine. An iPhone ringtone is limited to 40 seconds, so only 40 seconds are kept, from the start point you set under Options (the beginning by default). M4R is written at 192 kbps unless you choose another bitrate.

Questions

Are my audio files uploaded anywhere?

No. The M4A to M4R conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting M4A to M4R reduce quality?

M4R is a lossy format, so a small amount of detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can choose the bitrate under Options.

Can I convert several M4A files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert M4A to M4R on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the M4A file, press Convert and save the M4R. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Files up to 2 GB are accepted. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
