Choosing a video format
Video files are containers: an MOV, an MKV and an MP4 can hold the very same picture and sound. What differs is which devices will open the container. MP4 is the one that phones, browsers, TVs and upload forms all accept, which is why most video conversions end there. Older containers, from DVD VOB and Blu-ray M2TS to RealMedia, Flash and Windows recordings, mostly need converting to MP4 to be watched today. Video is the heaviest thing a browser can convert, so long or high-resolution clips take time.
