Older and specialist video formats to MP4
Each of these converts to MP4 in the converter at the top of this page: drop the file and MP4 is already selected. The type is detected from the file itself where possible, so a wrong or missing extension does not stop it.
MXF, DV, ASF, DIVX and WTV are read by the compatibility engine, ffmpeg built for the browser. It is a one-off download of about 10 MB that the browser keeps, it is slower than the built-in codecs, and it takes files up to 1 GB. F4V is tried with your browser's own codecs first, and handed to the compatibility engine if they cannot read the file.
- F4V
- The MPEG-4 based container Adobe added to Flash Player in 2007 so that sites could serve H.264 instead of FLV. Flash was retired at the end of 2020, but F4V files from video sites and capture software remain, and phones, browsers and editors often do not recognise the extension.
- MXF
- The container of broadcast television and professional cameras such as Sony's XDCAM: MPEG-2 or AVC-Intra video with metadata like timecode and clip names. It is made for exchanging footage between production systems, and phones, browsers and consumer editors do not open it.
- DV
- A raw stream of DV video as captured over FireWire from a MiniDV or Digital8 camcorder, about 25 megabits per second with every frame stored on its own, which comes to roughly 13 GB per hour. It is easy to edit, large for its quality, and not played on phones or in browsers.
- ASF
- The container underneath Windows Media: WMV and WMA files are ASF files with a more specific extension. Older IP cameras, TV capture cards and Windows recordings still write it, and phones, Macs and browsers do not open it directly.
- DIVX
- DivX-coded video (MPEG-4 Part 2) in a container; many files with the .divx extension are really AVI files renamed. DivX-certified hardware players play it, while phones, browsers and many editors do not.
- WTV
- The file Windows Media Center writes when it records television, introduced with Windows Vista. It stores the broadcast stream with guide data, recordings of copy-protected channels can be locked to the PC that made them, and few apps beyond Media Center, VLC and Plex open it.
About MP4
MP4 is the video container everything plays. It normally holds H.264 video and AAC audio, a pairing that phones, browsers, TVs and social networks all accept.
MP4 is a delivery format: other tools sometimes need audio only, a GIF, or a different container. MP4 plays on every phone, browser, TV and social network.
