How to compress an MP4
Add your MP4 files
Drop them onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads each file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.
Pick a level and press Compress
A level is already chosen. Pick another, or a size to fit under, if you like, then press Compress. The work happens in this tab and can take a while for a long file.
Download
Save each file, or all of them as one ZIP.
What each level does
- Keep quality
- Keeps the picture size and the frame rate. The video is encoded again, so this is not a plain repack, and a file that is already compact comes back unchanged.
- Balanced
- Scales a picture larger than 1080p down, measured on its shorter side, and halves a frame rate above 30 (60 becomes 30). Sound that is already AAC at a modest rate is copied as it is.
- Smallest
- Scales a picture larger than 720p down and halves a frame rate above 30. Sound is encoded at a lower rate too. Nothing is ever scaled up.
Compressing MP4 files: what to expect
An MP4 can hold almost anything, so the saving depends on how this one was made. A long clip from a phone or camera has the most to give. A short screen recording or a slide video is often small already, and then it comes back unchanged; the row says so before you press Compress.
The video is written as H.264 and the sound as AAC, in an MP4 again. An MP4 that holds only sound is left alone. Older formats such as AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP can be dropped on this page too: they come back as MP4.
Fit under takes a size instead of a level: type your limit, or pick one of the common sizes. The limit is per file, not for the whole batch.
Your device does the work, and long videos take a while. Keep the tab open while it runs; nothing is uploaded, so nothing waits in a queue.
Questions
Are my MP4 files uploaded?
No. Your MP4 files are never uploaded: they are made smaller inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Will the smaller file look worse?
That depends on the level you pick. Keep quality: Keeps the picture size and the frame rate. The video is encoded again, so this is not a plain repack, and a file that is already compact comes back unchanged. Balanced: Scales a picture larger than 1080p down, measured on its shorter side, and halves a frame rate above 30 (60 becomes 30). Sound that is already AAC at a modest rate is copied as it is. Smallest: Scales a picture larger than 720p down and halves a frame rate above 30. Sound is encoded at a lower rate too. Nothing is ever scaled up.
What if a file can't get smaller?
Then you get your own file back, unchanged, and its row says why: for example, that it is already as small as it gets at that level. You are never handed a file larger than the one you added.
How small can an MP4 get?
Type a size under Fit under and each file is made to fit it, keeping as much quality as fits. For a small limit that can mean a lower resolution or frame rate; the row says so. If the limit cannot be reached, you get the smallest version there is and the row says how far it got.
Is anything removed from the file?
Subtitle tracks, chapters and every audio track after the first are not kept, and the row names whichever your file has before anything runs. The title tag and the way the video is turned stay. Turn on Remove sound to drop the audio track altogether.
Why did my MP4 come back unchanged?
The size of the result is worked out before the run. If it would not be clearly smaller than your file, you get your own file back. That happens with clips saved at a low bitrate for their size, such as short screen recordings, and with an MP4 that has no picture. Smallest, or a size under Fit under, can still make a smaller file when Keep quality and Balanced cannot.
Is the sound in my MP4 re-encoded?
Only when it has to be. Sound that is already AAC, and not above the level's rate, is copied untouched. Anything else is encoded as AAC. Only the first audio track is kept, and surround sound becomes stereo.
