How to compress an audio file

  1. Add your audio files

Drop them onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads each file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. Pick a level and press Compress

A level is already chosen. Pick another, or a size to fit under, if you like, then press Compress. The work happens in this tab and can take a while for a long file.

  3. Download

Save each file, or all of them as one ZIP.

What each level does

Keep quality
For lossless files only. FLAC is repacked with stronger settings, and WAV, AIFF, WavPack and TTA become FLAC. The sound is identical, sample for sample.
Balanced
For MP3, M4A, AAC, Ogg and Opus. The file is encoded again at a lower bitrate, always clearly below the file's own.
Smallest
For the same lossy formats, at a lower bitrate still.

Compressing audio files: what to expect

Audio files are of three kinds. MP3, M4A, AAC, Ogg and Opus are lossy and already built to be small, so making them smaller means encoding them again at a lower bitrate, which costs some detail. FLAC, WAV, AIFF, WavPack and TTA are lossless and can shrink with the sound unchanged.

A lossless file always gets the lossless treatment, whichever level is picked. A lossy file has no Keep quality level: choosing it leaves the file as it is, and the row says there is no such setting.

An Ogg file that holds Vorbis comes back with Opus inside. Title, artist, album and cover art stay in the formats that carry them.

Fit under takes a size instead of a level: type your limit, or pick one of the common sizes. The limit is per file, not for the whole batch.

Some formats come back as another one that holds the same content in less space: WAV, AIFF, WV and TTA become FLAC; AU and CAF become ZIP. The row names the new format before anything runs.

Your device does the work, and long recordings take a while. Keep the tab open while it runs; nothing is uploaded, so nothing waits in a queue.

Questions

Are my audio files uploaded?

No. Your audio files are never uploaded: they are made smaller inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Will the smaller file look worse?

That depends on the level you pick. Keep quality: For lossless files only. FLAC is repacked with stronger settings, and WAV, AIFF, WavPack and TTA become FLAC. The sound is identical, sample for sample. Balanced: For MP3, M4A, AAC, Ogg and Opus. The file is encoded again at a lower bitrate, always clearly below the file's own. Smallest: For the same lossy formats, at a lower bitrate still.

What if a file can't get smaller?

Then you get your own file back, unchanged, and its row says why: for example, that it is already as small as it gets at that level. You are never handed a file larger than the one you added.

How small can an audio file get?

Type a size under Fit under and each file is made to fit it, keeping as much quality as fits. If the limit cannot be reached, you get the smallest version there is and the row says how far it got.

Is anything removed from the file?

Tags and cover art stay. A lossy file with more than two channels is mixed down to stereo, and the row says so. The sound of a lossy file is encoded again, which is where the saving comes from and where some detail goes.

Why was my Ogg or Opus file left alone?

Making it smaller means encoding Opus, and some browsers cannot do that. The row says so. The latest Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge will work.

Should I compress WAV or convert it?

Here a WAV becomes a FLAC: the same sound, nothing lost, in a smaller file. If you need a much smaller file and can accept a lossy one, convert it to MP3 on the converter instead.
