How to compress an MP3

  1. Add your MP3 files

Drop them onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads each file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. Pick a level and press Compress

A level is already chosen. Pick another, or a size to fit under, if you like, then press Compress. The work happens in this tab and can take a while for a long file.

  3. Download

Save each file, or all of them as one ZIP.

What each level does

Balanced
Encodes the MP3 again at a lower standard MP3 rate, clearly below the file's own. A file saved at a high rate drops further than one that is already modest.
Smallest
Encodes at a lower rate still. Stereo stays stereo and mono stays mono.

Compressing MP3 files: what to expect

An MP3 is already lossy, so there is no Keep quality level for it. The only way to make one smaller is to encode it again at a lower bitrate, which takes out a little more detail. The new file is written at one fixed rate, even if yours was variable.

Title, artist, album and cover picture stay, once.

Fit under takes a size instead of a level: type your limit, or pick one of the common sizes. The limit is per file, not for the whole batch.

Your device does the work, and long recordings take a while. Keep the tab open while it runs; nothing is uploaded, so nothing waits in a queue.

Questions

Are my MP3 files uploaded?

No. Your MP3 files are never uploaded: they are made smaller inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Will the smaller file look worse?

That depends on the level you pick. Balanced: Encodes the MP3 again at a lower standard MP3 rate, clearly below the file's own. A file saved at a high rate drops further than one that is already modest. Smallest: Encodes at a lower rate still. Stereo stays stereo and mono stays mono.

What if a file can't get smaller?

Then you get your own file back, unchanged, and its row says why: for example, that it is already as small as it gets at that level. You are never handed a file larger than the one you added.

How small can an MP3 get?

Type a size under Fit under and each file is made to fit it, keeping as much quality as fits. If the limit cannot be reached, you get the smallest version there is and the row says how far it got.

Is anything removed from the file?

No tags or cover art are removed. The sound is encoded again at a lower rate, which is where the saving comes from and where some detail goes.

Why did my MP3 come back unchanged?

An MP3 can only go to a standard MP3 rate clearly below its own. A file already at the lowest rate has nothing below it, and one where the new file would be less than a tenth smaller is left alone too. The row says which.

Why is my MP3 smaller than the size I typed?

MP3 comes in steps. The file is written at the highest standard rate that fits under your size, so it lands under it, sometimes well under, rather than on it. A size that needs less than the lowest rate cannot be reached, and the row says how far it got.
