  3. Download

Save the PNG, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

PGM to PNG: what to expect

PGM files are uncompressed and greyscale only, and few everyday apps open them. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparent backgrounds. PGM is at home in greyscale images in scientific and command-line tools; PNG is the usual choice for screenshots, logos, graphics with text or transparency.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can resize the result.

Pictures with more than 8 bits per channel are reduced to 8 bits when they are decoded.

PGM vs PNG

PGM

PGM image

PGM is the greyscale member of the Netpbm family: a text header and then one brightness value per pixel, uncompressed. It is used in image-processing courses, computer vision datasets and Unix pipelines where a minimal format helps.

Opens in GIMP, ImageMagick, IrfanView and Unix graphics tools; not browsers

PNG image

PNG stores every pixel exactly, with optional transparency. It was created as a patent-free replacement for GIF and is the standard for screenshots, logos and interface graphics. Photos saved as PNG are several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

Questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The PGM to PNG conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting PGM to PNG reduce quality?

No further quality is lost: PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly. The result is identical in content.

Can I convert several PGM files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert PGM to PNG on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the PGM file, press Convert and save the PNG. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Pictures of up to 120 megapixels are accepted (for example 12,000 by 10,000 pixels); a larger one is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
