A DOCX can look different on another computer, and not everyone has a word processor. ODT is an open standard that LibreOffice and OpenOffice use natively. DOCX is at home in documents that will be edited again; ODT is the usual choice for documents in open-source office suites.
DOCX is the format Microsoft Word has saved by default since Office 2007. Inside it is a ZIP archive of XML files describing text, styles and images. Layout can shift between Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice because each lays the text out itself.
