DOC is a legacy format that newer apps and online editors handle poorly. ODT is an open standard that LibreOffice and OpenOffice use natively. DOC is at home in compatibility with very old copies of Word; ODT is the usual choice for documents in open-source office suites.
DOC is the binary format used by Word 97 through Word 2003. Word replaced it with DOCX in 2007, and newer tools increasingly treat DOC as a legacy format.
