How to compress a PDF
Add your PDF files
Drop them onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads each file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.
2 MB is already set
Press Compress and each file is made to fit under 2 MB. Change the number first if your limit is a different one.
Download
Save each file, or all of them as one ZIP.
What each level does
- Keep quality
- Repacks the file without changing what you see or hear. The saving is modest.
- Balanced
- Looks the same to the eye, in a clearly smaller file. The right choice for most files.
- Smallest
- As small as it gets. Fine detail softens, which shows when you look closely.
What to expect
This page opens with Fit under set to 2 MB. Every file you add is made to fit under 2 MB on its own, keeping as much quality as fits; the level is not used while a size is set.
Most of a large PDF is usually its pictures: scans, photos, screenshots. Those are what can shrink. A PDF that is mostly text and drawings is already compact; it comes back unchanged, with a line that says so.
Questions
Are my PDF files uploaded?
No. Your PDF files are never uploaded: they are made smaller inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.
Will the smaller file look worse?
That depends on the level you pick. Keep quality: Repacks the file without changing what you see or hear. The saving is modest. Balanced: Looks the same to the eye, in a clearly smaller file. The right choice for most files. Smallest: As small as it gets. Fine detail softens, which shows when you look closely.
What if a file can't get smaller?
Then you get your own file back, unchanged, and its row says why: for example, that it is already as small as it gets at that level. You are never handed a file larger than the one you added.
How small can a PDF get?
Type a size under Fit under and each file is made to fit it, keeping as much quality as fits. If the limit cannot be reached, you get the smallest version there is and the row says how far it got.
Is anything removed from the file?
Nothing a reader sees is removed. Housekeeping data can go, such as a built-in preview picture or an editing app's private copy, and the result row lists whatever was. A digitally signed PDF is left alone unless you say otherwise, because a changed copy cannot carry a valid signature.
What about signed or password-protected PDFs?
A signed PDF is left unchanged unless you choose Compress anyway on its row; the smaller copy then has no valid signature, and the row says so. A locked PDF asks for its password on its row, and the smaller copy is locked with the same password. Limits on printing or copying are set again, but they only ask a PDF reader to respect them: they are not a lock. The password stays on your device: it is never sent and never saved.
