APK is an Android installer, and unpacking it does not give you readable source code. 7z usually compresses tighter than ZIP. APK is at home in installing Android apps; 7Z is the usual choice for the smallest archives.
A password-protected archive is refused, since its contents cannot be read without the password. An APK is a ZIP archive with a signature. The files inside are repacked unchanged, but the new 7Z is no longer signed, so it will not install.
An APK is the file Android installs an app from. It is a signed ZIP archive holding the compiled code, resources, images and a manifest. Stores deliver apps in newer formats today, but APKs remain the format for sideloading and for analysing an app.

Yes. An archive can be up to 500 MB, unpack to at most 1 GB and hold up to 50,000 files; beyond those limits the page says so. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
