APK is an Android installer, and unpacking it does not give you readable source code. TAR.GZ is the standard archive on Linux and for source code. APK is at home in installing Android apps; TAR.GZ is the usual choice for source code and server backups.
A password-protected archive is refused, since its contents cannot be read without the password. An APK is a ZIP archive with a signature. The files inside are repacked unchanged, but the new TAR.GZ is no longer signed, so it will not install.
