  3. Download

Save the WAV, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

AC3 to WAV: what to expect

AC3 is a surround-sound format that many phones, browsers and music players cannot play. WAV is uncompressed, so audio editors and transcription tools accept it without fuss. An AC3 file usually holds Dolby Digital, up to 5.1 channels. AC3 is at home in surround-sound film audio; WAV is the usual choice for recording, editing and mastering. WAV cannot bring back detail that AC3 compression already removed; it simply stores the result without further loss, in a larger file.

The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can trim the start and end.

This pair uses the compatibility engine, ffmpeg built for the browser, because AC3 is not handled by the browser's built-in codecs. It is a one-off download of about 10 MB that the browser keeps, it is slower than the built-in codecs, and it takes files up to 1 GB.

AC3 vs WAV

AC3

Dolby Digital audio

AC3 is the codec behind Dolby Digital, the surround-sound format of DVDs, digital television and many streaming services. A file can carry up to 5.1 channels. Most stereo music players do not handle it, so the track is usually extracted for editing or for devices that expect something else.

Opens in TVs, home-theatre receivers, DVD and Blu-ray players and VLC; many phones and browsers do not play it directly

WAV audio

WAV stores audio as raw, uncompressed samples. Nothing is lost, which makes it the standard working format in audio editing, and files run to about 10 MB per minute at CD quality.

Questions

Are my audio files uploaded anywhere?

No. The AC3 to WAV conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Does converting AC3 to WAV reduce quality?

Nothing more is lost: WAV is uncompressed, written as 16-bit audio, the same as a CD. It cannot restore what AC3 compression already discarded, and the file will be larger.

Can I convert several AC3 files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert AC3 to WAV on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the AC3 file, press Convert and save the WAV. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. AC3 to WAV runs on the compatibility engine, which takes files up to 1 GB, and a long clip takes a while because it is slower than the browser's built-in codecs. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
