AC3 is a surround-sound format that many phones, browsers and music players cannot play. M4A sounds better than MP3 at the same file size and is native to Apple devices. An AC3 file usually holds Dolby Digital, up to 5.1 channels. AC3 is at home in surround-sound film audio; M4A is the usual choice for music and voice memos on Apple devices. Both formats are lossy, so the content is compressed a second time; start from the best copy you have.
The defaults suit most files. Under Options you can choose the bitrate and trim the start and end.
This pair uses the compatibility engine, ffmpeg built for the browser, because AC3 is not handled by the browser's built-in codecs. It is a one-off download of about 10 MB that the browser keeps, it is slower than the built-in codecs, and it takes files up to 1 GB. M4A is written at 192 kbps unless you choose another bitrate.
AC3 is the codec behind Dolby Digital, the surround-sound format of DVDs, digital television and many streaming services. A file can carry up to 5.1 channels. Most stereo music players do not handle it, so the track is usually extracted for editing or for devices that expect something else.

M4A is a lossy format, so a small amount of detail is traded for a smaller file. At the default setting the difference is hard to notice. You can choose the bitrate under Options.
