How to convert DBF to SQLITE

  1. Add your DBF database tables

Drop DBF (dBase) files onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads the file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. SQLITE is already chosen

Press Convert. There is nothing else to set. The work happens in this tab.

  3. Download

Save the SQLITE, or download everything as one ZIP if you converted several files.

Why ToAny

  • Private by construction

The DBF to SQLITE converter is part of this page and runs inside your browser. Your database tables are never sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

  • No upload, no queue

Nothing has to travel to a server and back, so the conversion starts the moment you press Convert, even on a slow connection.

  • Free, without an account

No sign-up, no email address and no watermark. Add several files and download them together as a ZIP.

DBF to SQLITE: what to expect

DBF limits field names to 10 characters and its text encoding differs between programs. SQLite keeps tables, types and indexes together in one file. DBF is at home in legacy database tables and the attribute tables of shapefiles; SQLITE is the usual choice for application data in a single portable file.

A DBF file is a single table. Its text is read with the code page recorded in the file, and the field names become the first row. Each column gets one type chosen from all of its values: a column is numeric only if every non-empty cell is a number, and anything mixed, or a value such as a ZIP code with a leading zero, stays text. Each sheet becomes a table named after it, and a table may have at most 2,000 columns.

DBF vs SQLITE

DBF

dBASE table

DBF is the table format of dBase, the first popular database for personal computers. It stores fixed-width records with typed fields, field names of at most 10 characters and a code page for text. Many dialects (FoxPro, Clipper) exist, and shapefiles still use it for their attributes.

SQLite database

SQLite is a complete SQL database in a single file, with no server to run. It is in the public domain and probably the most widely deployed database in the world: phones, browsers and countless apps keep their data in SQLite files. The extension varies: .sqlite, .sqlite3 and .db are all used.

Questions

Are my database tables uploaded anywhere?

No. The DBF to SQLITE conversion runs inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. The file is not sent to ToAny or to anyone else.

Is anything lost when converting DBF to SQLITE?

The values are kept. Anything SQLITE has no way to express, such as formatting, formulas or nesting, is simplified or left out.

Can I convert several DBF files at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like, convert them together and download each result or all of them as one ZIP.

How do I convert DBF to SQLITE on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The steps are the same everywhere because ToAny runs in the web browser: open this page in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, add the DBF file, press Convert and save the SQLITE. There is nothing to install.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes. Binary data files up to 150 MB are accepted; a larger file is refused with a message. Beyond that the limit is your device's memory, since nothing is uploaded; a computer copes with large files better than a phone.
