How to compress a video

  1. Add your videos

Drop them onto the box above, or click it to choose them. ToAny reads each file's contents to detect the type, so a wrong extension does not matter.

  2. 20 MB is already set

Press Compress and each file is made to fit under 20 MB. Change the number first if your limit is a different one.

  3. Download

Save each file, or all of them as one ZIP.

The Discord limit

What each level does

Keep quality
Keeps the picture size and the frame rate in every format. The video is still encoded again, so this is not a plain repack.
Balanced
Scales a picture larger than 1080p down, measured on its shorter side, and halves a frame rate above 30. Smaller pictures and slower frame rates are left as they are.
Smallest
Scales a picture larger than 720p down and halves a frame rate above 30. The sound is encoded at a lower rate as well.

What to expect

This page opens with Fit under set to 20 MB, Discord's 20 MB limit. Every file you add is made to fit under it on its own.

How small a video can get depends on its length more than anything else: every second needs its share of the file. A size that is too small for the length cannot be reached, and the row says how far it got.

MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM and TS stay in their own container. The picture is written as H.264 and the sound as AAC, with two exceptions: MKV copies most sound as it is, and WebM gets VP9 and Opus where the browser can write them. In Firefox a WebM cannot be fitted to an exact size yet: it runs at Smallest, and the row says so.

AVI, WMV, MPG, M2TS, VOB, ASF, MXF, OGV and FLV are read by a slower built-in converter that is downloaded the first time. The row says to keep the tab open. It also names in advance what will not be kept: surround sound for all of them, and for most also subtitles and extra audio tracks.

Some formats come back as another one that holds the same content in less space: AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP, MPG, F4V, M2TS, VOB, MXF, ASF and OGV become MP4. The row names the new format before anything runs.

Your device does the work, and long videos take a while. Keep the tab open while it runs; nothing is uploaded, so nothing waits in a queue.

Questions

Are my videos uploaded?

No. Your videos are never uploaded: they are made smaller inside your browser, on your own phone or computer, and saved straight from this page. The reading at the top of the page counts every byte sent, and it stays at 0 B.

Will the smaller file look worse?

That depends on the level you pick. Keep quality: Keeps the picture size and the frame rate in every format. The video is still encoded again, so this is not a plain repack. Balanced: Scales a picture larger than 1080p down, measured on its shorter side, and halves a frame rate above 30. Smaller pictures and slower frame rates are left as they are. Smallest: Scales a picture larger than 720p down and halves a frame rate above 30. The sound is encoded at a lower rate as well.

What if a file can't get smaller?

Then you get your own file back, unchanged, and its row says why: for example, that it is already as small as it gets at that level. You are never handed a file larger than the one you added.

How small can a video get?

Type a size under Fit under and each file is made to fit it, keeping as much quality as fits. For a small limit that can mean a lower resolution or frame rate; the row says so. If the limit cannot be reached, you get the smallest version there is and the row says how far it got.

Is anything removed from the file?

It depends on the format. Every format keeps the picture and the first audio track only, so subtitles, chapters and any further audio tracks are not kept, surround sound becomes stereo and HDR is written as standard video. The older formats name this for every file before they run; the others name what applies to your file.

How large a video can I use?

Up to 2 GB for the formats the browser reads itself. Formats that need the slower converter, and any file the browser cannot read, are limited to 1 GB, and the row says when a file is over.

Why does a row say slower converter?

Some formats, such as AVI, WMV and MPG, can only be read by a converter that is larger and slower than the browser's own. It downloads once, runs on your device and nothing is uploaded. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
